Pyeloplasty surgery is usually recommended by pediatricians if your child experiences any abnormality in the proper functioning of the kidney and bladder. In medical terms, it is known as Pelviureteric Junction (PUJ) obstruction. Ureter is a tube in the human body that drains the kidney into the bladder and is thus essential for the healthy functioning of your child’s kidneys and bladder.
PUJ Obstruction is said to occur when there is a blockage between the kidney and ureter. These days, PUJ Obstruction is mainly detected as hydronephrosis on the ultrasound performed before birth itself (antenatal ultrasound). In older children, the common symptoms may be urinary infection or abdominal pain. Apart from Ultrasound testing, a few other tests are required to make a diagnosis and decide the course of treatment. When PUJ obstruction is confirmed, surgery may be required to correct it. The surgery is called Pyeloplasty, which is a delicate operation to remove the obstruction and reconstruct the internal urinary passage for free flow of urine. Traditional open surgery involves making a large cut on the child’s tummy to approach the kidney & perform the surgery. In contrast, laparoscopic pyeloplasty involves performing the same operation with 3 tiny 3-5 mm holes. Laparoscopic pyeloplasty thus results excellent success similar to open surgery but with much less pain and a virtually scarless surgery. Laparoscopic pyeloplasty is a technically demanding operation, and can only be performed by experts in pediatric laparoscopic surgery.
Ankura Hospital for Women and Children is one of the leading treatment centre for women and children, and this is reflected in the attention that is given to cases that require intensive care pertaining to children. Our team of doctors have decades of experience in handling sensitive and intricate cases, and bring to the table their vast experience in the field.
Dr VVS Chandrasekharam, our chief surgeon, has performed the largest number of laparoscopic pyeloplasties in children in the world. He has published several papers and original techniques in international journals on pediatric laparoscopic surgery, especially pyeloplasty. He is a pioneer in pediatric laparoscopic surgery in India and has trained many surgeons from India & abroad in pediatric laparoscopic surgery.
The laparoscopic surgery including anesthesia time usually takes a couple of hours. In the pyeloplasty surgery, a catheter (small tube) is inserted through the urethra into the bladder. The child is usually ready for discharge in 48 hours. Mild pain medication is usually required for 24-48 hours. The pain is significantly less in laparoscopic surgery, and the recovery is much faster.
Since the surgery is most commonly performed on young children, we at Ankura Hospital for Women and Children ensure that our team of doctors and nursing staff are adequately prepared to handle such situations. We understand that children cannot be expected to sit quietly during the entire process like adults. They often get fidgety, or intimidated by strangers and the hospital set-up. Which is why our nursing staff is trained to be friendly, and handle with utmost care and compassion such intricate cases pertaining to children.
