Childbirth is one of the most beautiful gifts that every woman has. It is said that the pain is but a pleasure women go through during childbirth, and it helps them become much stronger than ever. But it is difficult for many, to bear. In older times women were bound to go through pain during childbirth. Some women also faced critical conditions due to not being able to manage pain.

Today, painless delivery is an integral part of Obstetrics. With the advancements in the medical system these days, it has become much easier to manage labour pains during childbirth.

There are two stages of labour pain:

1. The first is the Visceral pain, which includes abdominal cramping and uterine contractions.
2. The second stage of labour is the Somatic pain, which is sharper and a more continuous pain. It also includes nerve entrapment caused due to the fetal head.

It is important for the obstetrician to keep in mind, that while pain reduction is a priority, it must in no way interfere with the natural process of childbirth, and the patient can ambulate (move about freely).

Labour pain relief can be administered in two ways:

Pharmacological – which includes narcotics, tranquillizers – and non-pharmacological methods – which includes hypnosis, acupuncture, and hydrotherapy.

Breath control and breathing exercises are also a crucial element of painless delivery. The mother needs to be aware of the different breath modulations she must practice, at various stages of the delivery. The correct posture is imperative and must clearly be communicated to the delivering mother.
