Children are the life of a household, their chirpiness, enthusiasm, inquisitiveness, and energy keeps the household alive. But, when the child falls sick, everything comes to a stand still, even if it is a mild temperature. Amidst many such diseases and illnesses, measles is one that can suck the energy out of your kid. Let’s figure out what this is.
What are Measles?
Not as widespread as it used to be earlier, measles is a very contagious, viral infection which has been controlled through vaccination. Yet, there are close to 1,00,000 people who suffer from the condition every year, most of which are children under the age of 5.
What are its symptoms?
The symptoms appear 10-14 days after exposure to the virus, these symptoms include,
- Dry cough
- Runny nose
- Sore throat
- Inflamed eyes (conjunctivitis)
- Tiny white spots on the inner lining of the cheek also called Koplik’s spots
- Skin rash
At what stage is the virus communicable?
The virus is communicable for 8 days all in all, four days before the rash appears and the 4 days following.
Your child are at a risk of developing the infection if your child is not vaccinated, if you and your child are travelling international or if your child has a low immunity along with vitamin A deficiency.
Is there a treatment available to cure measles?
No, there is no treatment for measles, it takes its course to recover, but the symptoms can be controlled with antipyretics, and medication can be administered to avoid developing diseases that could turn fatal like pneumonia.
Children who suffer from measles should be isolated to avoid others in the family catching the infection, that is people who were born after 1957 and have not been vaccinated.
