We all have at some point of time.

Mosquitoes have been a menace since the longest time now. They bite, sting and it itches. Most of mosquito bites are not harmful to the body.

Though there are many infected mosquitoes who carry the dengue virus and when they bite the body of a child, they transfer the virus to the person eventually causing dengue.

Dengue is a tropical disease and is notoriously called the breakbone fever’. It is a very common disease all over the world specially in tropical regions.

Once the dengue virus enters the body, it causes mainly fever which is the primary symptom. In some cases, the effects of dengue can be more serious and often cause death as well if not treated in time and effectively.

A fact about dengue is that, in most cases, when a baby or a child gets affected by dengue for the first time, that person is immune to that particular virus on a long term basis, but has short term immunity against other types of dengue virus.

Causes of Dengue:

The primary cause of dengue is when a child is bitten by a mosquito carrying the dengue virus. The most common type of mosquito which usually carries and spreads the dengue virus is the female tiger mosquito. It is also called the Asian Tiger Mosquito as it is predominant in the tropical and subtropical parts of Southeast Asia.

Symptoms of Dengue:

The symptoms which are seen due to dengue do not appear immediately after getting bit by a carrier(A carrier is a mosquito which carries the dengue virus) mosquito.

If a child gets fever out of the blue, it does not always mean that it is dengue which is the cause of it. In most cases, the symptoms occurring due to dengue appears between four days to two weeks after the child has been bit.

Once the symptoms show up, they usually stay for two to seven days. It is always better for the parents to get their child checked up when the fever is there for more than two days itself.

Earlier the diagnosis of dengue, the better it will be for the treatment to be done.

Along with fever, the following symptoms should also be checked in a child. These symptoms are mainly seen in the case of younger children. 

  • A running nose.
  • Skin Rashes
  • Cough
  • Sudden fever where the temperature rises up at a fast rate.

There are also symptoms which affect older children which are slightly different in nature. 

  • Continuous pains in most of the joints in the body
  • Headaches and continuous backaches.
  • Sudden bleeding from some parts of the body such as gums or nose. This usually happens is due to the low platelet count which is caused by dengue fever.
  • Nausea and Vomiting.
  • Decrease or complete loss of appetite.

All of these symptoms are very important to notice. Since the window of opportunity to diagnose and treat dengue fever is around four to seven days, it is very important to understand the symptoms and identify it as dengue. It is essential for the child to be taken to a reputed pediatrician who can help with the treatment of the disease in an effective way so that the disease does not become fatal.
